Copycat Longhorn Mashed Potatoes Recipe

Make the delicious Longhorn Steakhouse mashed potatoes from home with this simple and easy mashed potato recipe.

Longhorn Steakhouse is a favorite restaurant of my family. Whenever my brother comes to down, it’s almost certain we will go there.

While they have delicious steaks and chicken dishes, I think the real winners at Longhorn are their side dishes. Over the years, I’ve recreated tons of Longhorn Steakhouse recipes, and their mashed potatoes are one of my favorites.

Their mashed potatoes are just the right amount creamy and buttery, with some gentle lumps mixed throughout. They’re perfect when paired with Longhorn’s broccoli and my personal favorite dish, the parmesan-crusted chicken. We’ve spent a lot of time developing this recipe, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Ingredients:

  • 3 lbs russet potatoes
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 1 Tablespoon minced garlic
  • Pepper (to taste)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Extra Melted butter

Instructions:

  1. Peel and cook potatoes until soft with your preferred method.
  2. If you cook in a pot, bring the water to a boil, add potatoes, and then bring down to a simmer. Cook for about 20-25 minutes, or until a fork goes through easily.
  3. Drain excess water. Set aside one potato in a bowl.
  4. Mix together the softened butter with the minced garlic.
  5. Add the heavy cream, butter, and sour cream to the potatoes and mix until pureed with a hand mixer. You may have to add more heavy cream to get them REALLY smooth.
  6. With the potato you set aside, mash coarsely.
  7. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Top with melted butter.

I made the potatoes in my Instant Pot, but you can easily make them with your preferred method of preparing potatoes for mashed potatoes (including in a kitchen aid mixer!)

Our whole family really enjoyed these mashed potatoes, and I hope that your family will, too.

Longhorn Steakhouse Mashed Potatoes FAQ + Tips

Do I have to use an Instant Pot?

Nope! While the Instant Pot is a great shortcut, you can absolutely boil your potatoes on the stove, baked them, or even steam them. Just make sure they’re fork-tender before mixing.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Yes! These mashed potatoes reheat well. Store them in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat over low heat on the stovetop or in the microwave, stirring in a splash of cream or milk to restore creaminess.

Can I make it vegan or dairy-free?

While it won’t taste quite the same, you can sub in full-fat coconut cream for the heavy cream and a good vegan butter. There are also dairy-free sour cream alternatives you can try.

Do I have to use a hand mixer?

To really mimic the texture of Longhorn’s mashed potatoes—ultra-smooth with a few rustic lumps—a hand mixer works best. A blender can work, too. If you only have a masher, it’ll still be delicious, just less creamy.

How much does this recipe make?

This recipe makes about 8 cups, which serves 6–8 people depending on serving size. A good rule of thumb:

  • Adults: ~1 cup each
  • Kids: ~½ cup each

Tips for Getting That Signature Longhorn Texture

  • Reserve a potato. Don’t skip this! Mashing one potato separately and mixing it in at the end gives you that perfect blend of creaminess with a few rustic chunks.
  • Warm your dairy. Room temperature or warm cream and butter blend in more easily and help your potatoes stay hot.
  • Taste as you go. Salt and pepper are everything here—don’t be shy!

What to Serve with Longhorn Mashed Potatoes

  • Juicy Steak – Just like at Longhorn
  • Parmesan-Crusted Chicken – A must-try pairing
  • Turkey or Ham – Perfect for holidays
