Make the delicious Longhorn Steakhouse mashed potatoes from home with this simple and easy mashed potato recipe.
Buttery Garlic Mashed Potatoes
As I mentioned when I shared my Longhorn Steakhouse Brocolli recipe a few weeks ago, Longhorn is my new favorite restaurant.
It’s just a few minutes from our house (which is dangerous), and I just discovered they have amazing lunch specials AND pickup.
Also dangerous.
The last time we went, I got mashed potatoes, and I LOVED them.
They tasted so different from any other mashed potatoes I’ve gotten. They were super creamy and buttery but had some chunks, too. It was such an interesting texture.
Because I love doing copycat recipes, I decided to tackle this one at home.
In an effort to be thorough, I got a pickup order the other day to make sure I didn’t forget how they tasted.
I think that I got them down to an art now, and I’m super excited to be able to share this recipe with all of you.
I made the potatoes in my Instant Pot, but you can easily make them with your preferred method of preparing potatoes for mashed potatoes (including in a kitchen aid mixer!)
Our whole family really enjoyed these mashed potatoes, and I hope that your family will, too.
What Can I Serve With This?
Mashed potatoes go wonderfully with so many dishes!
- Roast beef
- Chicken
- Turkey
- Meatloaf
- Ham
- Rolls
FAQ
- How can I make this vegan? While I haven’t tried this, you could try and use coconut milk cream and vegan butter.
- Can I make this without an Instant Pot? Absolutely! Just boil your potatoes in a pot!
- Can I just use a potato masher? To get the same consistency of Longhorn mashed potatoes, you will need to use a hand mixer. You could also use a blender.
- How much should I make for X amount of people? I usually suggest about 1 cup for adults and 1/2 cup for children. This recipe as written makes around eight cups.
Longhorn Mashed Potatoes Recipe
Equipment:
- Instant Pot or Large Pot
- Bowl
- Hand Mixer
- Measuring Cups
- Potato Pealer
Ingredients:
- 3 lbs russet potatoes
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/3 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup softened butter
- 1 Tablespoon minced garlic
- Pepper (to taste)
- Salt (to taste)
- Extra Melted butter
Instructions:
Peel and cook potatoes until soft with preferred method. I personally used my Instant Pot using this Instant Pot Mashed potato recipe (I just stopped after I drained the water, as this recipe is different). I peel the potatoes and quarter them, cover with water (or you can just do two cups) and cook on manual high for 7 minutes.
If you cook in a pot, bring the water to a boil, add potatoes, and then bring down to a simmer. Cook for about 20-25 minutes, or until a fork goes through easily.
Drain excess water. Set aside one potato in a bowl.
Mix together the softened butter with the minced garlic.
Add the heavy cream, butter, and sour cream to the potatoes and mix until pureed with a hand mixer. You may have to add more heavy cream to get them REALLY smooth.
With the potato you set aside, mash coarsely.
Add salt and pepper to taste.
Top with melted butter.

The ingredients list published by Longhorn says there is soy milk in theirs. I suspect they are also using a thickener (flour, xanthan gum or otherwise).

I am so happy someone finally made a recipe for Longhorn’s mashed potatoes. As a mashed potato addict, I have never ever tasted any recipes like their savory mashed potatoes. This is heaven sent! Thank you so much.

Are you using minced garlic from the jar, or fresh minced garlic?
Katie Clark says
Sorry misread that question! I used it from a jar.

These are SO good! Longhorn’s mashed potatoes are a family favorite. The first time I made these I didn’t tell my family that they were a Longhorn copycat. As soon as my son took a bite he excitedly said “these taste JUST like the potatoes at Longhorn!!”. Win! Thanks for a great recipe!

Hello! Would this recipe work if I used a potato ricer instead of a mixer?
Katie Clark says
I haven’t tried that before, but I think that would work out okay!
