  4. Add butter and sour cream and mash with a potato masher or hand mixer.
  5. Add in bacon bits, green onions, cheese, salt, and pepper.

You can, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you are planning to bake the recipe – it’s much better fresh. If you are going to bake it, just make the recipe as described and follow the instructions for baking below – however, wait for the mixture to cool before covering it with cheese and then cover with plastic wrap, then refrigerate until you are ready to cook.
