Homemade Breadsticks

Quick Breadsticks

So many of my food memories have to do with things my mom made growing up.

I just always remember having a home-cooked meal every night, and it was always so delicious.

One of my favorite meals was her easy meat lasagna, which was almost always paired with breadsticks.

She always made breadsticks with Rhodes rolls, which were delicious. And I often use that same recipe!

However, I thought it would be fun to come up with my own twist on those breadsticks by making them homemade.

The base for this recipe is our quick dinner roll recipe, which is always a big hit.

Quick Breadsticks

My boys helped me make them, and they really are a quick breadstick recipe. Even if you haven’t baked bread before, I don’t think you can mess them up.

They are pretty fluffy – like rolls – and they had great flavor. My boys kept raving about them!

I love baking bread, but sometimes it can take so long! So these are great for those of you (myself included) who don’t have the patience for a longer process.

Equipment:

  • Stand Mixer or hand mixer with large bowl. I love both my Kitchen Aid and Bosch Mixer. The Bosch is excellent for bread making. Read my comparison of the two mixers here.
  • Dough hook attachment
  • Jelly Roll/Cookie Sheet
  • Silicone Baking Mat (or Cooking Spray)
  • Glass pie pan (or another larger, flat dish with edges)
  • Basting Brush (I LOVE silicone basting brushes)

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup + 2 tablespoons warm water
  • 1/3 cup melted salted butter
  • 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 3 1/2-4 cups white flour

Topping

  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 Tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Italian Seasoning
  • Grated parmesan cheese
  • Extra butter for brushing on at the end

How to Make Breadsticks

Combine water, butter, yeast, honey, and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer (or another large bowl if you are using a hand mixer) and let sit for about 10 minutes.

Add in salt, egg, and about 2 cups of flour and combine using a dough hook attachment.

Add in more flour, 1/2 cup at a time, mixing with the dough hook, until your dough is only slightly sticky and bounces back when you touch it.

Let it knead with the dough hook for about five minutes.

Spray a cookie sheet or put a silicone baking mat on the cookie sheet.

Melt butter in the microwave in a glass pie dish and add seasonings and mix.

Make the dough into 12 equal-sized balls.

How to make breadsticks

Roll each dough ball into a breadstick shape.

Roll each breadstick in the butter mixture and place back on the baking sheet.

Parmesan Breadsticks

Sprinkle parmesan cheese on top.

Let rise 20 minutes.

Preheat over to 400 degrees.

Bake for about 15 minutes or until brown.

Brush on extra butter while still hot.
