How to Make a Bread Bowl from Frozen Roll Dough
This two-ingredient bread bowl recipe made from frozen roll dough is so simple to make, you’ll wonder why you haven’t been doing this your whole life.
Is there really anything better than eating soup from a bread bowl? I think not! I’ve always felt intimidated by the thought of making a bread bowl myself, but once I learned how to make bread dough with frozen Rhode’s Rolls, I knew I had to share the good news with everyone else!
Easy Bread Bowl Recipe
I love this recipe so much because it is so easy to make, but it really elevates any soup you pair it with. And honestly, who doesn’t love eating the bits of the bread bowl that have soaked up all the yummy soup?
This recipe only takes two ingredients – frozen rolls (I use Rhodes rolls) and an egg for the egg wash on top. Although it may seem like this recipe takes a long time, it only requires about 20-30 active minutes. This recipe is easy to make just like the Longhorn bread recipe that I love to make all the time.
After the rolls have thawed and risen for the first time, you’re going to combine three rolls to make one bigger roll and coat it with an egg wash. If you’ve never made an egg wash before, don’t be scared and don’t skip this step! It’s what makes the outside of the bread crunchy and shiny. All you have to do is remove the egg from its shell and whisk vigorously until well combined and smooth.
What should I serve with my bread bowls?
These are some of my favorite things to serve with bread bowls:
- Clam chowder
- Chili
- Spinach and artichoke dip
- Tomato soup
- French onion soup
How can I customize the bread bowls?
Rolls are a great blank canvas to experiment with, but the easiest way to get started is sprinkling a little bit of seasoning on top before you throw it in the oven. You might consider Italian seasoning, everything but the bagel seasoning, or maybe even sprinkling a little bit of cheese on top!
Can you make bread bowls ahead of time?
You can absolutely make bread bowls ahead of time! Just make sure to store them in an airtight container and don’t put them in the fridge. They should last around 4-5 days.
When you’re ready to serve them, bake them in the oven at 350 for 10-12 minutes.
Ingredients
- 3 frozen rolls per bread bowl
- 1 Whole Egg
Instructions
- Place frozen rolls on a greased cookie sheet – you will need three per bowl you are making. You don’t need to place them super far apart, because they’ll end up being combined, anyways!
- Cover with greased plastic wrap and let rise about five hours. I let them rise overnight, and that worked well.
- Once they have risen, combine three of the rolls together and roll into a big, round ball.
- Place each ball back on the cookie sheet, brush with an egg wash, cover with greased plastic wrap, and let rise 2-3 hours in a warm spot.
- Bake at 350 for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove from oven and cut off the top of each bread bowl and remove the inside of the bowl.
- Let cool and then serve immediately or store for another time.

How do I make it into a bowl?
This step is really one of the easiest parts of this recipe, and kids absolutely love helping with this part. All you have to do is slice the top off the bread so it’s flat on top, then use your fingers to scoop out the center – that’s it!
What can I do with the bread that I pull out?
I totally understand not wanting to just throw out the insides, and I have the perfect solution – croutons! Croutons make great toppings for soups and salads, and they are so easy to make.
All you have to do is take the bread that you removed and cut it (or tear it – I’m not judging) into 1-inch pieces. Toss them in olive oil or melted butter, sprinkle with whatever seasoning you want, spread them out in single layer on a parchment lined baking sheet, and bake at 375 for about 15 to 20 minutes. Keep a close eye on them so they don’t burn.
