Recipe Tips + Suggestions

  • We recommend making this recipe the night before. This will allow for all the flavors to blend together.
  • Because of the mayonnaise, don’t leave this sitting out at room temperature for longer than about an hour.
  • You can store this in the fridge for up to four days.
  • You can freeze potato salad, but the texture will likely not be what it was like when it was made fresh. Make sure you allow it to completely defrost.

Variation ideas

Although this recipe offers the perfect Amish salad that is rich and delicious, you can add a few ingredients to add more flavor and texture to the salad. These are:

  • Apple cider vinegar: A dash of apple cider vinegar adds acidity to the salad. It balances out the flavors by cutting through the sweetness. If you don’t like your salad very sweet, add apple cider vinegar for punch. You can also add distilled vinegar instead of apple cider vinegar.
  • Black pepper: Freshly ground black pepper adds pepperiness to the salad.
  • Paprika: to bring in smokiness, add smoked paprika to the salad.
  • Red chili flakes: Red chili flakes also bring in heat to the salad.
  • Carrot: Add a grated carrot for more flavor, freshness, and color.
  • Pasta: To make the Amish potato salad even tastier, add boiled pasta.

What is the difference between Amish potato salad and regular potato salad?

Although the main ingredients of both salads are almost the same, a slight difference makes the two different from each other. The primary difference is that of the dressing. A traditional potato salad dressing is creamy and rich, but the Amish potato salad dressing is slightly sweeter and has a depth of flavor due to the sweet mayonnaise dressing. The main ingredients that set the Amish potato salad apart from the regular salad are mustard and sugar. Most potato salads have the same basic ingredients with a few things changed up.
