Making Mashed Potatoes with Kitchen Aid

Making mashed potatoes has never been easier than with a stand mixer! Here are some tips for making the best mashed potatoes using your Kitchen Aid Mixer.

Simple, easy-to-follow instructions for how to make mashed potatoes with Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer. Make light and fluffy whipped potatoes in about 20 minutes!

I love my KitchenAid stand mixer. I use it time after time, day after day. If you have a Kitchen Aid or have been wanting one, today I’ve got the perfect recipe you’ll want to try!

The KitchenAid mixer makes making mashed potatoes SO easy. I used to dread the thought of standing over the hot stove for what seemed like forever, stirring and mashing my own potatoes. When it came down to it, I realized that potatoes take about 20 minutes (I’m not including boiling time). That’s not bad, but it’s still 20 minutes that I could be doing something else. So, for those of you who would like to try restaurant-style mashed potatoes (or any other recipe where you use a mixer) and see how easy it is, read on!

I also combine this method with using my Instant Pot to cook the potatoes, which eliminates the need for boiling water. While you can definitely mash your potatoes in the Instant Pot, I find using a Kitchen Aid or other stand mixer to be simpler, more hands off, and great for making large amounts.

Honestly, you can use any of your favorite mashed potato recipes and just finish them off in the Kitchen Aid. But I’ll share some of my favorites here.

Tip: If you don’t want to save your potatoes for later in the week, use this tip! Keep a stock of peeled baking potatoes in your freezer and when you need mashed potatoes or baked potatoes, just pull a bag out of the freezer! They work great and take no time to thaw!

Now that you have your potatoes, ingredients and instructions, let’s start. To make mashed potatoes with the KitchenAid mixer, follow these easy steps:

Bosch versus Kitchen Aid

There are many different stand mixers out there, but it’s usually a debate between these two fantastic stand mixers.

I own a Kitchen Aid Artisan and a Bosch Mixer. They both work great for mashed potatoes, but I can make way more with my Bosch! The capacity is just a lot higher than my Artisan, struggling with less than five pounds of potatoes.

What is the consistency of potatoes with a stand mixer?

It really depends on what ingredients you put in the potatoes and how long you mix it for. These mashed potatoes were creamy but still had some lumps. Some people complain of the potatoes getting glue-like, but this typically just happens when you add too much liquid. Start with a small amount of liquid and add as needed.

How long are mashed potatoes good for in the fridge?

No longer than two to three days in the fridge. When properly stored, mashed potatoes have a shelf life of about 4 months in the freezer.

1 month (30 days)  is the maximum recommended time for storing mashed potatoes in the fridge, assuming that you will consume them within that timeframe.

Do you have to peel the potatoes?

A personal choice! I personally love mashed potatoes with skins in them, but many people do not. If you want to keep the potato skins on, though, that’s fine, and you can follow the recipe the same way.

What do I need to make mashed potatoes in Kitchen Aid stand mixer?

You need a Kitchen Aid Mixer and the standard paddle attachment. You could also use a whisk attachment once your potatoes have started to get mashed – this can give them a little more airy texture.

Can you use instant potato flakes to make mashed potatoes instead of regular russet potatoes in KitchenAid stand mixer?

I haven’t done this, and I am not sure it would work very well. I would cook potato flakes on the stovetop.

Can I freeze mashed potatoes?

You can freeze mashed potatoes for up to three months. However, the quality may suffer after the first month of freezing. After thawing, they may also start to taste watery or dry out quickly which makes them less appealing than before they were frozen.

The best way to freeze mashed potatoes is in one-cup portions or in ice cube trays, which are the perfect size for adding to recipes later on. The cubes can easily be added to soups, sauces and other dishes without having to thaw them first.

Freeze cooled mashed potatoes in airtight containers or heavy-duty freezer bags.

What should I serve mashed potatoes with?

They go great with many different types of meals – we love them with roast beef, chicken dishes of all kinds, turkey, ham and even salmon. I know that some people like to serve a scoop of mashed potatoes with their chicken noodle soup!

Why is it important not to over-mix mashed potatoes?

Over-mixing mashed potatoes results in a glue-like texture that is not very appealing!

What are the best potatoes for mashed potatoes?

To create the best possible mashed potatoes, you need a starchy potato. The starch content will determine how light and fluffy your mashed potatoes turn out. In general, russet potatoes are the most common choice for making excellent mash, but an even better option is Yukon Gold or Yellow Finn. You can use these three types of potatoes to make the most delicious mashed potatoes.

What are some variations for mashed potatoes?

The recipe we have here is straightforward. You could add garlic powder, minced garlic, thyme, seasoning salt, or other seasonings. Some people like to add cheese for a more rich mashed potato. However, this can often lead to the gluey potatoes I’ve mentioned. Grated parmesan cheese can work well, though.

What is the difference between instant and fresh mashed potatoes?

Instant mashed potatoes – These are dehydrated, then ground potatoes are cooked and then dehydrated again. Depending on the manufacturer, these can be prepared by adding boiling water to the mix, or they may require additional cooking.

Fresh mashed potatoes – These are regular peeled and boiled potatoes that have been smashed with a masher into a fine consistency. Real mashed potatoes do not contain ingredients other than potatoes.

Nutritionally, fresh mashed potatoes have a slight advantage over instant mashed potatoes because they contain all their ingredients in a more concentrated fashion. Healthy eaters should remember this when using fresh or instant mashed potatoes.

One interesting difference is that instant mashed potatoes may take longer to heat through and become fully cooked, but fresh mashed potatoes may take longer to cool down. If you are serving them right away, this doesn’t make any difference. But if people are going to be grabbing seconds later, those seconds might get a little cold as the first servings sit on the table.

Can I use a handheld mixer instead of a KitchenAid stand mixer?

Yes, you can.
