Mashed potatoes are one of those comforting side dishes that show up at Sunday dinners, holidays, and weeknight meals—and once I discovered how effortlessly they come together using a stand mixer, I never looked back!

As someone who uses her KitchenAid almost daily, I can confidently say this is one of the easiest—and tastiest—ways to whip up a big batch of mashed potatoes. When you combine this with my Instant Pot mashed potato method, you’re in for a real treat!

Why I Love This Method

Before using my mixer, I used to spend way too long mashing by hand, standing over a hot pot. But now? I let the KitchenAid do the work! Pair it with your Instant Pot for cooking the potatoes, and you’ve got yourself a hands-off, mess-free mashed potato method that’s perfect for family dinners or holiday feasts.

Want ultra-creamy? Slightly chunky? You can customize the texture with just a few mixer settings – and it’s easy to scale up for a crowd! This is a great option for mashed potatoes and potato side dishes.

Ingredients:

  • 5 lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • ½ cup butter
  • ¼–½ cup heavy cream or half & half
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: Garlic, paprika, or seasoning of choice

Instructions:

  1. Boil the cubed potatoes in a pot of salted water for 15–20 minutes, or until fork-tender.
  2. Drain the potatoes and return them to the warm pot to steam off excess moisture.
  3. Transfer potatoes to the mixing bowl. Use the paddle attachment on low speed to begin mashing.
  4. Once partially mashed, add butter, cream, salt, and pepper. Start with less liquid and increase as needed.
  5. Mix on medium speed until you reach your desired consistency. For extra fluff, switch to the whisk attachment.
  6. Top with melted butter and a sprinkle of paprika if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!

My Top Tips for Perfect Mashed Potatoes

  • Don’t overmix! Too much mixing = gluey potatoes. Mix just until smooth and creamy.
  • Warm your dairy before adding to prevent cooling down the dish.
  • Use starchy potatoes like Russet or Yukon Gold for the fluffiest results.

Storing & Freezing Mashed Potatoes

  • Fridge: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Freezer: Freeze in 1-cup portions or ice cube trays for up to 3 months. Reheat with a splash of milk or cream for best texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the consistency of potatoes with a stand mixer?

It really depends on what ingredients you put in the potatoes and how long you mix it for. These mashed potatoes were creamy but still had some lumps. Some people complain of the potatoes getting glue-like, but this typically just happens when you add too much liquid. Start with a small amount of liquid and add as needed.

Do I have to peel the potatoes?

Nope! I personally love mashed potatoes with skins—it adds texture and fiber. Totally up to you!

What do I need to make mashed potatoes in Kitchen Aid stand mixer?

You need a Kitchen Aid Mixer and the standard paddle attachment. Once your potatoes have started to get mashed, you could also use a whisk attachment — this can give them a slightly more airy texture.

What if I want to add flavor?

Try garlic (minced or roasted), parmesan cheese, seasoning salt, or herbs like thyme. To prevent gumminess, avoid adding too much liquid or melty cheese all at once.

Can I use instant potato flakes?

I wouldn’t recommend it for this method. Instant flakes are best prepared separately, usually on the stovetop.

What are some variations for mashed potatoes?

The recipe we have here is straightforward and makes for a great base. You could add garlic powder, minced garlic, thyme, seasoning salt, or other seasonings. Some people like to add cheese for a more rich mashed potato. However, this can often lead to the gluey potatoes I’ve mentioned. Grated parmesan cheese can work well, though.

Bosch versus Kitchen Aid

There are many different stand mixers out there, but it’s usually a debate between these two fantastic stand mixers.

I own a Kitchen Aid Artisan and a Bosch Mixer. They both work great for mashed potatoes, but I can make way more with my Bosch! The capacity is just a lot higher than my Artisan, struggling with less than five pounds of potatoes.
