Do Sourdough Rolls taste sour?

Sourdough rolls are fluffy and delicious and have a chewy, distinct flavor that is like none other. I wouldn’t say they taste sour. It might be slightly tangy but definitely not over powering or bitter. It is the perfect combination of tangy and savory!

It is a flavor that might take a minute to get used to but I have found most people love sourdough bread.

How long does it take to make sourdough rolls?

These rolls are a slight labor of love because of the rising time. If you are in a hurry you can use our Instant Pot Rising Instructions .

Once you have formed the rolls you will want them to rise for another six hours- so plan accordingly. There are a few tips to help the rise faster. One way is to turn your oven to 200 degrees and set the rolls in their dish on your stove top.

Or

Turn your oven to 200 degrees. Once it’s preheated, turn it off, and place the rolls inside to rise. Once they are ready to bake they will need to bake for 20-25 minutes

How do you kneed bread dough?

You can do this with either a dough hook- which I prefer because it takes the grunt work out of it or you can kneed it by hand.

To knead your dough you will begin by pushing the dough away from you with the heel of your palm, folding it over itself with your fingers, and pulling it back. Repeat these steps over and over until the dough becomes smooth smooth and springy.

Instant Pot Rising Instructions

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3/4 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 1 cup active sourdough starter (220 grams)
  • 3 – 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Butter for brushing the tops

Instructions

  1. Mix together the buttermilk, sourdough starter, butter, egg, salt and white sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer and mix until combined. If you don’t have a stand mixer, mix vigorously with a wooden spoon.
  2. Add in the flour slowly, 1/2 cup at a time and mix until the dough is no longer sticky. Combine each 1/2 cup with the other ingredients well before adding more flour – too much flour will make these dense.
  3. Once all the flour is added, let it knead with a dough hook attachment for about 10 minutes, or until the dough is soft, smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can hand kneed it.
  4. Place in a butter bowl and let rise in a warm spot until about doubled – or around 12 hours. If you are in a hurry, you can use an Instant Pot (see instructions above for Instant Pot rising).
  5. After the dough has risen sufficiently, punch it down into the bowl gently. Divide the dough into 12-14 equal pieces.
  6. Form the dough by pulling four sides into the center and the rounding out the roll.
  7. Place in a greased 9×13 glass dish. Let rise – this may take 6-8 hours. For a faster rising time, turn your oven to 200 degrees. Once it’s preheated, turn it off, and place the rolls inside to rise.
  8. Once the rolls have risen, set the to 375 degrees. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
  9. Brush with butter and enjoy!

I’m excited to try this recipe! Could I make the dough and then put it in the fridge for a couple days? Then pull it out and let it rise and proceed with baking?

Hi, Lynn! I haven’t personally done this, but I think that would work just fine! I would probably do the first initial rise on the counter top though. Let me know how it works out!
