I love a good trend – especially when it has to do with hot cocoa.

If you haven’t been living under a rock, you’ve probably seen the viral “Hot Cocoa Bombs” sweeping Instagram Reels and TikTok videos.

Costco released a Hot Cocoa Bomb set for the holiday season, and they are really hard to find. I couldn’t find one, either! And because of the high melting chance of a hot cocoa bomb, you really can’t get them shipped.

So what’s a girl to do but make one herself?! That’s exactly what I did.

I saw some other tutorials and did a lot of experimenting, and I think I have the PERFECT method for making a hot cocoa bomb.

Once you figure out the basics for making one, the sky is the limit – you can experiment with different flavors, hot cocoas, and mixins. Ah. SO fun.

What You Need:

Alright, let’s start with the basics of what you are going to need:

  • Silicone Half Circle Mold (I’ll share on that below)
  • Melting Chocolate wafers – you can buy these at most grocery stores, Target, Walmart, craft stores, etc. I used a few different brands that I had around the house, but I think my best results were with some milk chocolate that I had from Chocoley. Sadly, I just saw they are out of business. The Wilton ones I used worked just fine, too.
  • Hot cocoa – you need 1-2 tablespoons per hot cocoa bomb. You can use whatever flavor you want! I found some fun individual packets from King Soopers in different flavors (like Mexican Hot Chocolate and Salted Caramel) but you can do whatever you want.
  • Mini Marshmallows – what is hot cocoa without marshmallows?!
  • After I share how to make them, I will share some additional mixins
  • A pan for the stove

Directions:

  • First, you need to melt your chocolate. I use my Pampered Chef Silicone Prep Bowl set, which I LOVE. Seriously one of my favorite kitchen products. I melt them in for 30-second increments at full power, mixing in between each section. I think it usually takes about two minutes to melt it completely.
  • After your chocolate is melted, use a spoon to coat the inside of each silicone mold. You want to make sure it’s coated completely. I just used the spoon to move it around.
  • Place in the refrigerator for 20 minutes or in the freezer for five.
  • Remove and add another layer of chocolate – making sure to focus especially on the top edge. This is ESSENTIAL. We found that just one layer of chocolate made it too brittle, and when I tried to put too much chocolate the first time, it all rushed to the bottom.
  • Place in the refrigerator for 20 minutes or in the freezer for five.
  • Carefuly release the top edges of the chocoalte from the mold, then carefully pop out the enitre chocolate. If you are having trouble, run the mold under some warm water.
  • Place a pan on your stove top and turn to the lowest setting.
  • Place each half circle, edge side down, onto the pan for about two seconds
  • Add 2 tablespoons of hot cocoa to one of the half circles and then some marshmallows
  • Place the empty half cricle on top and gentle press together
  • Let harden
  • And enjoy!

Hot Cocoa Bomb Molds

hot cocoa bombs

You definitely want a silicone mold for these hot cocoa bombs. It will be really hard to get them out otherwise!

All the ones I saw online for half circles were on back order until next month. So I started searching for alternatives, and I came across these great circle, silicone ice cube trays at Target. I just used one half, but they were perfect. It was available in store right away!

Here are some other options:

Variations

The sky is the limit with these! You can make these as simple or as fancy as you’d like

Types of Chocolate

  • Dark Chocolate
  • Milk Chocolate
  • White Chocolate
  • Mixture of dark and milk (do one layer dark, one layer milk)
  • Different colors of melting chocolate
  • Caramel (if you can find good quality caramel chips that melt well)
  • Andes Mints (haven’t actually tried this yet, but I think it would work and be delicious!)

Hot Cocoa Flavors

I mean, you can really use whatever hot cocoa flavors you want! There are so many out there – from traditional milk chocolate, to dark chocolate, to Mexican hot chocolate and salted caramel…just take a walk down the hot cocoa aisle at the store and see what you can find!

Toppings

I tried to keep mine pretty simple, but you could easily top your hot chocolate bombs with sea salt, drizzles of different types of chocolate, sprinkles, etc.

If you want to add toppings like salt or sprinkles, you’ll need to warm the top up a little bit.

Mixins

Obviously, I used marshmallows – but there are lots of fun things you can add that would make for a fun surprise!

  • Candy cane pieces
  • Chocolate chips
  • Caramel chips
  • Andes mint baking pieces
  • Nuts
  • Flavored marshmallows
  • Cinnamon

How to Use a Hot Chocolate Bomb

I have tried two different ways for using the hot cocoa bomb. – dropping it in warm milk or pouring warm milk over the chocolate bomb.

I find that pouring the milk over the chocolate bomb is the best! I warm up the milk in the microwave for one minute at a time until nice and warm. Then I place the chocolate bomb in the mug and pour the milk over it.

It takes about 30 seconds for it to “explode” with the hot cocoa and marshmallows. After it’s exploded, I mix around the hot cocoa in with the milk. There will be some thicker chocolate from the bomb that you can mix to incorporate for the most delightful hot chocolate of all time!

How to Store Hot Cocoa Bombs

Because they are made of chocolate, you want to make sure they are stored in a place that isn’t super warm. I actually kept mine out overnight at room temperature, and they were great.

I would say it’s probably ideal to store them in an air tight container in the refrigerator. If you want to deliver them to someone, you can use a cookie or a cake box – just make sure you don’t leave them on a door step on a warm day!

Where to Buy Hot Cocoa Bombs

Hot Cocoa Bombs can be purchased at various stores. Right now, Costco is definitely the most popular place. I personally haven’t found them yet, but I’m not giving up hope. It’s about $20 for a big box!

I’ve also seem them at Target, Trader Joes (their hot cocoa snowman was a huge hit last year), and I can only imagine that other stores will be releasing them as well once they see how popular they are!

Dessert and sweet stores are also making their own spin on the hot cocoa bomb. My friend posted a box that she got in Davis County in Utah that looked so delicious and yummy!

  1. I bought these exact molds and have absolutely no luck getting the chocolate to come out without breaking into a thousand pieces. What could I be doing wrong?

    1. That is so frustrating! I made sure to have a lot of chocolate on the top edge. We also ran some warm water on the mold right after we took them out of the freezer to help get them to pop out a little easier!

  2. I, too have great difficulty. I have triple layered the chocolate around the tops, and making sure there are no ‘light spots’. When I pop them out, they come out well, but sometimes, once I heat, and press together they develop holes everywhere. its frustrating because I dont know the reason.
I even wear gloves so the heat from my hands doesn’t melt them..HELP…I want these to be perfect for gifts…

  3. I bought these molds as well and I have tired to make these about 6 times now with no luck. Every single one cracks into pieces 🙁 . I really wanted this to work but no success.
