Recipe Tips
Brush the puff pastry with an egg wash (beaten egg with a splash of water or milk) before baking. This will give the pastry a beautiful golden-brown color.
Make sure to pinch the edges of the puff pastry well around the brie to prevent leaks. You can use a fork or your fingers to press it down tightly.
Once it’s out of the oven, let the baked brie rest for about 5-10 minutes before cutting. This helps it hold together when sliced.
Substitutions and Variations
Try subsituting the brie for any of the following:
- Camembert: Similar to brie but with a slightly earthier flavor. It melts beautifully and has a creamy texture.
- Goat Cheese Log: Wrap a goat cheese log in puff pastry, which pairs well with cranberries and gives a tangy twist.
- Cream Cheese or Triple Cream: For a milder, smooth option that will still melt nicely.
Additional Toppings or Fillings
- Chopped Nuts (pecans, walnuts, or almonds): Adds a nice crunch and flavor contrast.
- Fresh Herbs: Sprinkle rosemary, thyme, or sage inside for a fragrant, earthy note.
- Honey or Maple Syrup: Drizzle inside or over the top to add a rich sweetness that works well with cranberries or any of the above fruit fillings.
- Apple or Pear Slices: Place a few thin slices inside for a fresh, slightly sweet flavor.
Puff Pastry Substitutes
- Phyllo Dough: Gives a flakier, layered texture, but it’s more delicate, so you’ll need to layer several sheets and brush with butter in between.
- Pie Crust: For a denser, homemade feel; it won’t puff up as much but provides a lovely, buttery crust.
- Crescent Roll Dough: Gives a softer, fluffy texture; great for a quick version.
Storage Recommendations
Allow the baked brie to cool to room temperature. Wrapping it while still warm can lead to condensation and sogginess. Once it’s cooled, wrap the brie tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Make sure it’s well-sealed to keep air out and prevent it from drying. Place the wrapped baked brie in the refrigerator. It will stay fresh for up to 3 days. To reheat, preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Unwrap the brie and place it on a baking sheet. Warm it for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melty and the pastry is crisp again.
