How to make mashed potatoes in the Instant Pot

Creamy, hearty and delicious. Those are the words that I use to describe mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes are one of those foods that we love to eat not only at Thanksgiving, but for any kind of family gathering at the dinner table. When paired with meat like a roast, turkey or ham, it’s to die for (not to mention the gravy… Yum!)

But who has time to peel, boil, cut and mash potatoes? It’s a lengthy process that requires a lot of work.

Behold the Instant Pot! This method of cooking mashed potatoes significantly cuts down the time and effort usually given to make mashed potatoes. You can even keep the skin on to save even more time! Just wash and cut the potatoes in half, cook them in the Instant Pot for a few minutes, mash and mix and there you go! Delicious red skin mashed potatoes in minutes.

Why an Instant Pot instead of other methods?

There are so many advantages to using an Instant Pot when it comes to mashed potatoes. I’ve already mentioned the time and effort you can save above, but I can’t overemphasize that enough. All it needs is 5 minutes to cook in the Instant Pot until it’s done cooking. The longest part of the process is just waiting for it to pressurize.

Another benefit is how easy it is to clean. Since you can do every part of the cooking process in one pot, all you have to clean is just one pot! This makes your kitchen much cleaner and helps you with a quicker cleaning process.

You can also trust the Instant Pot to handle the cooking. There is no need to watch the water boil or to make sure that it doesn’t boil over. Push some buttons on the Instant Pot and walk away while it does the magic. You can focus on preparing other parts of the meal while the potatoes are cooking in the pot.

These are only some benefits of using an Instant Pot, but you will learn them all once you try it for yourself.

What potatoes should be used?

I use red potatoes for this recipe because they are smaller so they need less cooking time and they provide the best texture for mashed potatoes with skin. Red potatoes are also relatively healthy compared to other types of potatoes. This article by Black Gold Farms gives 10 healthy reasons to use red potatoes that you can look at.

Other types of potatoes could also be used, but the cooking time may have to be adjusted based on the size of the potatoes. Larger potatoes require more cooking time. Other texture differences also exist so be aware of that.

What can I put into the mashed potatoes?

This recipe is great because of the things that I put into the mashed potatoes. I love putting in salt, heavy cream, butter, and garlic powder in the potatoes to add some great flavor and creamy texture to the potatoes. Also, adding gravy on top of it is to die for.

I’ve also used sour cream and some roasted garlic at times too. Feel free to add other things to the recipe to make it your own. But I wouldn’t add much more than these things, otherwise the flavor would be too much or the texture would be either too creamy or watery.

How can I store leftovers?

Make sure you put any leftovers in an airtight container and put it in the fridge for up to 3 to 5 days. You could also freeze it in an airtight container, but that wouldn’t be ideal for the taste or texture.
