Mexican Fruit Salad with Cream

I love a good fruit salad, and as I looked around for different variations I could make, I came across the idea of a Mexican fruit salad with cream. It sounded rather delicious!

This type of fruit salad typically uses Mexican Crema, sweetened condensed milk, and various in-season fruits. I recently made my version for my family, and it was a huge hit! The crema helps cut down on the sweetened condensed milk, combining quite nicely with the fruits I used. This would be a great side dish for Cinco de Mayo!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Mexican crema
  • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup diced watermelon
  • 1 cup diced papaya
  • 1 cup diced strawberries
  • 1 cup diced mango
  • 1 cup cubed pineapples

Directions:

1. In a bowl, mix the cream, sweetened condensed milk and vanilla until smooth. Set aside.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use other fruits?

The beauty of fruit salad is its adaptability to the available fruits. I chose fruits popular in the Mexican region, though they may not be available to you or in your region – or you may not like them (my middle child did not love the papaya).

Some other fruits that would taste good in this fruit salad are:

  • Grapes
  • Pomegranate seeds
  • Guava
  • Prickly Pear
  • Dragon fruit

Where can I find Mexican crema?

This is found in most grocery stores in the refrigerated dairy aisle. You can also find it at Mexican grocery stores if you have one near you.

Can I use sour cream instead of crema?

You can use sour cream if you don’t like crema or cannot find it. I find it thicker and has a more pungent taste, so you will want to taste your fruit salad dressing before adding it to ensure it tastes how you want it to.

What are the storage recommendations for this salad?

Because of the dairy products in this dish, it shouldn’t sit at room temperature for very long. When it is not being served, please keep it in an airtight container in the fridge.

When stored properly, it should last in the fridge for 3-5 days.

Can you make this dish ahead of time?

Yes! I recommend making this fruit salad the night before for the best flavor.
